Computer Technology and Children - Future

Since their rapid growth following the second world war, computers have no doubt transformed the way we live (Pickover, 1992). As a result many people are questioning the impact that computers may have on children’s lives in the future. There is a general consensus that for children to participate socially, economically, and politically in this new technological world, they must be competent in the use of computers (Shields & Behrman, 2000). Today in the “Digital Age�, almost every job requires knowledge of computers, and increasingly, productivity is directly related to an individual's level of computer expertise (Rosenberg, 2004). The rising emphasis on computers in the workplace is also expected to increase E-commerce, E-management and E-governance, which will have a profound effect on children’s futures (Rosenberg, 2004).

It is also theorised that classrooms in the future will change as a result of computer technology. Some researchers believe that computerised blackboards and notebook computers will replace the more traditional forms in the classroom and others postulate that the number of traditional school buildings will decrease (Pickover, 1992).

As for the effect that computer use has on children, much more research is needed to determine conclusive evidence. However it is recommended that we begin to take steps that can help maximise the positive effects and minimise the negative effects of computers in children's lives (Shields & Behrman, 2000). Shields & Behrman (2000) state that if we take these steps today, “we can help empower all children to use the tool effectively, responsibly, and creatively to shape the digital world of tomorrow�.
