Edonkey is a file-sharing program that is decentralized like Kazaa and unlike the original Napster. There are two types of connections to the edonkey network, as a client and a as a server. Emule and MLDonkey are popular clients to the edonkey network. Edonky has recently surpassed Kazaa in popularity as Kazaa struggles with file integrity issues. Edonkey and Kazaa are reportadly hovering around the 2.5 Million user mark with edonkey ahead by a few hundred thousand. These figures may be inaccurate on real users with many record companies flooding Kazaa with bogus users uploading fake song files.
Edonkey 2000 has major advantages over other file-sharing programs because it allows partially downloaded files to be shared. It comes bundled with ad ware, however this is not a compulsulary installation. The registered version like many other similar program is free of advertisments. (filesharingwatch.com, 2004)
