GPS - Convergence

From M/Cyclopedia of New Media
Jump to: navigation, search

As a result of the convergence between once distinct industries such as Information Technology, Telecommunications and Media, many new products and services have been developed. For example "Convergent products and services are forms of media and information content that take advantage of a networked broadband infrastructure , the capabilities provided by digitalisation, and the scope for interactivity and user customisation of services" (Flew, 2002). Bluetooth technology and Global Positioning Systems are a result of functional convergence between information technology and telecommunications. In comparison, Digital Television has been developed from the convergence of all three industries opening more opportunities for more advancements in this field. During the mid-1970s, dominant forms of telecommincations, media and computing were operated solely without the dependance of others (Flew, 2002). The 1990s on the other hand "hailed the rise of convergent media, led by the rapid growth of the Internet and personal computing" (Flew, 2002, pg 18). The consequences of this has induced the emergence of new wireless technologies that have revolutionised communication through the marriage of content, location and time (Webtech Wireless 2004). Wireless Global Positioning Systems have allowed convergence to progress providing people and businesses with fleet management, localized information, improvement in emergency and safety services and network management. These functions of Global Positioning Systems and wireless technologies when implemented into vehicles have become successful due to the fact that "consumer awareness and interest is increasing in vehicle tracking, roadside safety services, traffic alerts and anti-theft services" (Webtech Wireless 2004). In addition, the overall idea of knowing exactly where someone is or exactly where you are going are features which possibly excite people and encourage them to purchase this type of equipment in order to keep up to date with new technology.

Convergence is an important part of any new media technology as it contributes to the overall progression and development of creating new products and services for beneficial purposes. According to the Productivity Commission, convergence is; driven by technology, a powerful force for change, prospective and unpredictable (Convergence. In Broadcasting inquiry report, (2000) Online). Furthermore, convergence can also bring about some interesting creations such as the Internet Refridgerator and other Home Network products by LG. Many of these appliances seem like a novelty at the moment due to the fact that our minds are not yet in tune with associating our mobile with air conditioning or the Internet with our refridgerators. However, the global positioning system was also just a novelty once and is now gradually becoming more of a necessity in our lives today. For more information on this topic see GPS - Novelty to Necessity.

Overall, without convergence technology would not have the opportunity to advance and provide us with new products and services that are more efficient, more exciting and more affordable for our busy lifestyles. Global Positioning Systems in the future will most likely flourish as this equipment is becoming more versatile in order to function within many different occupations.
