2channel is the largest Internet forum in the world. With over 10 million visitors every day, it is gaining significant influence in Japanese society, approaching that of traditional mass media such as TV, radio and magazines�? (Wikipedia, 2channel, 2005)

Overview


2channel is a Japanese based, non-commercial internet forum that emerged on May 30th, 1999. Initiated by Hiroyuki Nishimura, 2channel consists of over 600 categories (e.g. ‘Movie’, ‘Computer Science’, ‘Sports’), with each category usually consisting of over 100 discussion pages created by individuals (e.g. ‘Terminator 2’, ‘Yahoo vs. Google’, ‘Corner Kick manual’). Each discussion page is limited to a maximum 1000 postings and is required to be refreshed after this threshold is reached in order to continue the discussion.


Influences to the Japanese society


  • Intentions of murder and suicide notices are posted frequently, garnering substantial media awareness.
  • Some journalists utilise 2channel as a source of news and information.
  • Most people believe that news provide by 2channel is substantially less biased than mainstream television, radio and newspapers.
  • On October 10th 2004, the novel ‘Densha Otoko’ was published based on the stories relayed within a discussion forum for single males.
