“Digital TV brings offers a far wider choice of TV viewing, free from the intereference that you may experience on analogue TV (the five channels you get via your standard TV aerial). Digital TV also offers other benefits, such as a greater selection of widescreen programming and in some cases, Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Digital TV follows the worldwide DVB (Digital Video Broadcast) standard�.


With its improved quality of viewing, Digital television is becoming more widely implemented and preferred, and is currently operation in one in five homes. In Australia the most prominent Digital Television provider is Foxtel Digital – an new enterprise for subscription television provider Foxtel (a joint News Corporation and Telstra Corporation cable television venture established in November 1994).


Foxtel Digital draws upon existing programming from its cable and satellite services, but goes further to offer a greater range of local and international channels to its customers. It also offers a range of new functions previously unavailable with its regular services. These include the ability to affect camera angle when watching sports programs, being able to single out desired of news programs, and some PVR capabilities and a digital guide giving viewers total control over their viewing by offering a complete program guide (sorted by channel or screening time), the ability to set program reminders and general ease of navigation.


With the launch of its new services, Foxtel advertised with an extensive and informative commercial television and print campaigns, clearly outlining the services’ new features, and endorsed by popular Australian film and stage icon Hugh Jackman.
