LAN Gaming - Public Computer Access

Public Computer access - which is now predominantly provided by Internet Cafes, some libraries, and LAN (Local Area Network) gaming centers - is a serious issue which goes far beyond computer games. Public access to technology is becoming increasingly important in this day and age. Everyday tasks such as paying bills, shopping, managing bank accounts, booking travel, accessing directories, and entertainment can be completed from just about anywhere that has computer access. Although this seems a positive step towards a modern society, there are people that may be left behind. Social considerations must still be made to aspects such as cost and knowledge.

Even though modern personal computers have been in existence for decades now, the cost of this technology has not been substantially reduced. Computers may be getting more powerful yet they are still expensive devices. Mobile devices are helping fill this gap with computing capabilities. These devices are much less costly with the advantage of allowing the user increased mobility.

Due to certain issues, such as security for instance, access to information (public and private) may require the user to be running the latest programs with the most recent security updates. The catch is that the latest programs usually require the latest operating systems and computers to run them. If you do don’t have access to this technology then you are unable to use these services.

People are not born with the skills to use a computer. Children, whose families that can provide them with this technology at an early age, have a distinct advantage. Most schools in Australia provide students with computer education as they realize that society is becoming dependant on technology. Steps must still be made to offer adequate education to those that need it.

Not everyone can afford or gain access to this technology which is why public computer facilities serve such an important role in our society. To be able to fully benefit from this technological progression, all members of society must have access.
