Several chapters will be useful for this assignment. One chapter in particular, ‘New media and new audiences’ looks at how new technologies are causing the media industry to rethink traditional methods and practices such as audience research. It looks at how audiences are responding to new media and how to plan for these markets within Australia, keeping in mind our cultural identity. Sue Turnbull’s chapter ‘Audiences’ also addresses convergence and its effects on audiences. This book is compiled by many academics in the area of media and communications and those within the industry. This makes the resource credible, in-depth and consequently extremely useful.

This book is a dictionary of key concepts in the area of communication, cultural and media studies. It provides a brief, yet comprehensive overview of many concepts and looks specifically at convergence and globalisation. Because each concept is separately defined it provides the reader with a general framework to firstly get enough of an understanding of the issue/concept and secondly direct the reader to related concepts, which may help for further research. This book will prove itself to be an extremely useful tool when coming across media concepts mentioned within other and more complex readings and will help to break down complex theories and discussions of convergence and globalisation.

This chapter provides an insight as to how converging technology is not only blurring the technologies uses but its domino effect on related industries. It links convergence to globalisation and media ownership (a major issue in the globalisation debate) and will be useful to quote when trying to illustrate how these issues are all interrelated. The text uses real life examples which give the theories behind convergence and new media technologies a ‘real-life’ element. It touches quite extensively on the money involved in new media technologies and their convergence, which gives the reader a perspective on how much ‘possible’ power these technologies possess. It looks at how convergence has facilitated globalisation and the interdependence of national economies. Furthermore it has a whole section almost entirely dedicated to digitalisation, which allows the reader to get an understanding of the technology without having to understand a lot of technical jargon. Lastly it illustrates the fact that convergence is an ever evolving issue, which is important to understand when looking at the issue.

Vision 20/20 is a paper written and compiled by the Australian Communications Authority. It is divided into sections, two of which will be of particular use. The first section, ‘introduction’ sets out the papers purpose, which puts a context on the remaining information, which is helpful in understanding the paper as a whole. It identifies one major theme as “emerging communications environment is one of complexity, uncertainty and dynamic change�?in an increasingly global operating context�. This theme is very relevant to convergence and globalisation. Not only does it look at the present communications environment, it paints scenarios that could possibly occur in the future. While the paper has a regulation focus, the information will still help in supporting theories and understanding likely future implications of convergence and global media.
