===Privacy Issues involved with Mobile Telephones===

Batista, E. 2003. New privacy Menace: Cell Phones? Wired News.
http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,57692,00.html (accessed August 9, 2004)

A very helpful article exploring the privacy issues of camera phones and the risk people's privacy is at everyday being exposed to this new technology. It has been noted in this article that mobile phones have been banned from some gyms, art museums and concert halls. Elisa Batista explains the risk factors involved with these technologies for example your photo can be taken without your permission in a public place such as a gym locker room and then it can be posted on the internet therefore highly invading your personal privacy. These camera phones can be used so easily and in art museums it is quite easy for the artist's privacy to be invaded, hence a copyright issue. The article also notes the sales percentages of these camera phones and the fact that they will only increase despite the privacy issues at hand. This article is specifically related to the topic of privacy issues involving mobile phones, the fact that Elista Batista has taken the time to write this article means that this is a potential problem involving modern day technologies.

Davidson, P. 2004. "Directory of cell phone numbers coming soon". USA TODAY, http://www.detnews.com/2004/technology/0408/04/etech-228881.htm (accessed August 8, 2004)

Early next year in the United States of America a directory of mobile phone numbers will be introduced, though there is still quite some controversy on the releasing of this kind of customer information. The article sports two sides of the argument, the side that suggests that mobile phone number directories are a positive and would be of use to the general public, also obviously the side whom think the directories are a negative and an invasion of privacy. The article tends to explain how this would be a good thing and how the facts support it but the fact that a lot of people do not agree is obvious. The article sides with the directory not being an invasion of privacy therefore it is not that helpful, but the controversy of the topic it sparks is quite interesting.

Encarnacao, J. L. Rabaey, J. M. ed. 1996, Mobile Communications: Technologies, tools, applications, authentication and security, Chapman & Hall, London. ISBN 0-412-75580-7

“An Authentication and Security Protocol for Mobile Computing written by Yuliang Zheng chapter 25 of this book emphasises the importance of the security of mobile phones and the security issues in wireless networks. It provides information about such issues including the authentication of a mobile user. The chapter examines the security and privacy concerned with the emergence of wireless communications, its importance is significant in the wireless networks due to the mobility of users and ‘open-air transmision’. “Especially, security and privacy becomes more eminent with wireless networks pg 249. The use of formulas in the chapter is somewhat confusing but they are used to explain the importance of security and privacy. It also examines the protocols of security and privacy including the Beller-Chang-Yacobi Protocol “consists of five (5) moves (or steps) of information between a mobile user and a base station". It is a basis of security and privacy issues before new technologies have been introduced.

FCC Moves to Ban Spam on Cell Phones. The DMA. 2004. http://www.the-dma.org/cgi/dispnewsstand?article=2609 (accessed August 9, 2004)

One of the most current articles involved with this issue, provides a different spin on the privacy issues involved with mobile phones. It looks at a different form of privacy invasion called spam on cell phones. This is a form of marketing that companies use, they can obtain mobile phone numbers by having competitions which prompt mobile phone users to SMS the companies. This article is informing readers what laws are associated with this problem and what they are intending to do about it. “Unsolicited text messaging is already prohibited under an earlier law that prevents telemarketing calls to mobile phones, the FCC said. The article reveals that people are not abiding by this law and therefore the consequences of these actions. It is very useful as it gives a different view on the expanding is a privacy problem involving mobile phones other than camera phones.

Holtzman, J. M. Goodman, D. J. 1994, Wireless and Mobile Communications, USA, Kluwer Academic Publishers. ISBN 0-7923-9464-X

An easy to read book that offers facts on the security polices and security requirements of the Customer premises network (CPNs). It goes into detail about authentication and security Policy, confidentiality of the customers and integrity of wireless communication available when it was written. This information will be helpful when researching the privacy and security problems that are now current with the new mobile telephone technologies, including the dangers of Bluetooth and the wireless directories. The book is not very recent and only just touches on the security factors involved in wireless communication in the 90s therefore it will not be as helpful as the other sources but can still be useful in discussing the background of security and privacy. An informative source which may or may not be helpful.

Sensura. 2003. Novel solution to camera phone privacy abuse. Product news. http://www.electronicstalk.com/news/ssa/ssa101.html (accessed August 9, 2004)

“The proliferation of camera phones has prompted widespread concern over privacy. (novel solution to camera phone privacy abuse)This article suggests that cameras in mobile phones can be used in aid to paedophilia and other sexual assault dangers. The security and privacy of consumers and the general public is an important factor of the producing and selling of camera phones. This article is specifically focussed on a solution to the problem surrounding this technology. Sensura and Iceburg systems claim they have invented a new technology that disenables the camera in public places such as swimming pools and schools where the use of camera phones seems to be innappropriate and could be an invasion of privacy. The article is helpful in the sense that it records that these companies have seen the problem and think it is large and serious enough to design a solution to it.

Wireless Directories Could Generate Big Revenues: Study: Mobile Pipeline News. 2004. http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/cmp/20040805/tc_cmp/26805779 (accessed August 9, 2004)

This article as does the article "Directory of cell phone numbers coming soon", explores the establishment of wireless directories and their effect on the consumer. Although rather short it is a detailed account of the possibilities that may occur if these directories come into use. This article points out the relevance of wireless communication as a marketing tool, presently the receipt of marketing calls or text messages is by consumer choice. The article states that the study discovered the directories to be a neccesity because a number of people do not have landline phones and only use wireless. However with the instigation of mobile directories this could lead to opportunistic marketing and other forms of invasion of privacy.

Tachikawa, K.ed. 2002, W-CDMA Mobile Communications System, John Wiley and Sons LTD, England. ISBN 0-470-84761-1

This book offers a more current approach to the newer technologies of mobile telephones for example: video phones and multimedia messages. As it was written less than 3 years ago it is more recent than many of the other books exploring wireless communication systems, therefore the information it contains may be more helpful than that of other books. Although it is not specific to the privacy issues being researched it sets a very strong basis for the understanding of the mobile telephone technologies involved in such privacy issues. The book explores the technicalities of SMS, MMS, WAP, Bluetooth and many other systems that are recent to mobile phones. It is an in-depth study of how such systems work and how they have improved over time, there has been a use of diagrams to aid the explaining of these technologies and systems. It is very informative and technically written consequently it can be slightly difficult to understand, but otherwise quite helpful.

Weinstein, L. 2003. Tiny cell phone or Big Brother. Wired News. http://www.wired.com/news/privacy/0,1848,57040,00.html (accessed August 7, 2004)

Lauren Weinstein’s article ‘Tiny cell phone or Big Brother’ is an article that explores the positive and negative aspects of new mobile phone technologies. It not only touches specifically on the positives of camera phones and location tracking systems but also the negatives involving privacy issues associated to the new technologies of wireless phones. Lauren Weinstein makes a very valid point about the dangers of such technologies, the article attempts to spark awareness of these privacy issues. “We must update our thinking -- and in some cases our laws -- to take into account the ways in which wireless is very literally changing our world.(Tiny cell phone or Big Brother?) The article has high relevance and importance to the topic at hand of wireless communication and privacy issues.

Zetter, K. 2004, Security Cavities ail Bluetooth. Wired News. http://www.wired.com/news/privacy/0,1848,64463,00.html (accessed August 9, 2004)

This article is an informative article not only exploring the privacy issues related to mobile telephones but also another wireless technology: Bluetooth. It elaborates on a serious flaw in the bluetooth technology associated with mobile phones. Bluetooth enables attackers to track a victim, read their messages, access their calenders and even plant ‘phony text messages’, it is expressed in the article that up 70% of phones that were road tested were vulnerable to such attacks. The article informs the reader about the privacy issues that this involves. Kim Zetter moves into an in-depth explanation of the abilities of the Bluetooth technologies. This article stresses that the problem is not going away in fact quite the opposite it is actually spreading. It is helpful, in-depth and informative in researching dangers of mobile telephones.
