=Independent Music:online distribution and promotion=
My passion is for music. For our assessment in KCB336, I would love to explore how Independent record labels and musicians / bands are now using the interent as a way to promote and distribute their music. What are the old forms of music distribution? How have these influenced the new forms of distribution? etc.

3. Helmstetter, Anthony. Simpson, Ron. (1996) Web developer's guide to Sound and music: your complete guide to interactive sound design for the interent and web , Arizona, USA.: The Coriolis Group Books, ISBN 1883577950.
- This book shows readers how to integrate audio into their webpage’s. To be noticed out of a million others, websites must keep people informed, entertained, and wanting to come back for more. What Helmstetter and Simpson want to communicate is that graphics alone are pleasing to the eye but should not be relied upon to make the success of a webpage. By adding sound and music to a page, it adds value and helps to get the persons message across. This book is basically three books put into one: 1) Web audio delivery techniques, 2) Sound and recording process, 3) Art of sound integration and how to use it on your web site. Sound and music answers all of the questions one may have about what it takes to achieve sound on web sites, providing readers with real life examples to identify with. This book explores step-by-step methods, for example, how to convert files, mixing tracks, recording voice narration etc. It identifies and describes all the technologies one must work with and relates it back to common cases the reader may be aware of.

4. Lathrop, Tad. Pettigrew Jr, Jim. (1999) This is the business of music marketing and promotion, New York, USA.: Watson-Guptill, ISBN 082307711X.
- This publication provides musicians with accurate and current information about the music industry, business customs, technology, and finance, also ending with some words of experience and advice from industry professionals. The book is divided into four main parts: ‘The music marketing environment’, ‘Hands on music marketing and promotion’, ‘Music marketing and promotion on the internet’, and ‘In the words of the professionals – interviews’. Hence, this book is great for musicians who are either interested in the traditional process (which this book covers the most) or the up and coming wave of promotion on the internet. Lathrop and Pettigrew Jr cover the lot, defining music marketing and promotion in the marketplace, traditional record company processes, marketing tools, artists’ choices, packaging / visual branding, finance, delivery formats, distribution, live performance, expanding the marketing program, and music publishing (only to name a few). Part Three is a great starting place for independent musicians seeking to be unique and successful as an internet based artist. It covers topics such as creating your own web site, the internet distribution process, promotional tools, and financing. This is where the future in music may lie; taking the DIY alternative.

5. Love, Courtney. (2000) Courtney Love does the math [Online]. Available: Courtney Love does the math [Accessed 20/9/03]
- Many may consider controversial singer / songwriter Courtney Love not to be a reliable source but do not be mistaken. Love has been inside the music industry for less than a decade, but she has witnessed and experienced it all. She herself has been battling with record companies and contracts and has had enough just like many of her peers in the industry. It is time for the major record labels to suffer. Love rambles on about piracy, statistics, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), and the possible future for music if people get it right. Love does not find that music downloads and websites such as Napster are piracy. She believes that technology may save the purity of music / artists and will destroy traditional access; having a connection between the artist, to the fans, as opposed to the connection between the artist, to the label, then to the fans. New technologies such as digitalisation and streaming have brought about a real chance to crack the old system, and provide musicians with real freedom, opportunity, and choice. Keep in mind that musicians are not brands!
