This book provides a detailed, precise look at the artistic and aesthetic principles and practices of editing for both picture and sound. This book includes the ‘history of film editing’, the ‘editing for the genre’, and the ‘principles of editing’. The part, ‘history of film editing’, gives a clear and ordered statement for film editing, examines from the Silent Period to New Technologies. In the part of ‘Nonlinear Editing and Digital Technology’, it explains the technological revolution and the limitation of technology. It also emphasizes on how new technology has influenced the art of editing, including MTV style, psychoanalytic ideas, and the appropriation of style over content. Correlative technical terms such as ‘special effect’, ‘digital’, and ‘optical track’ are defined clearly in this book. This article explores some of the implications of computer generated imagery for the cinematic representation of the past. In particular, it focuses on the most contested and controversial area of contemporary fiction cinema’s representation of the past – the use of documentary images as a mode of imaginative reconstruction or re-enactment. This article contains a series of examples, like JFK, Forrest Gump, and The Birth of a Nation, to consider the documentary images of the history of the twentieth century and the widespread use of computer generated imagery in film, which allows filmmakers to fuse photographic and digital images.

This book is written specifically for the Australian industry. It has very detailed steps of guiding to the latest film, video and new media technology. The book features production-oriented, includes some terms like convergence, multi-platform delivery, digital TV, broadband and DVD, introduces the background to the cyclical production model, how the cyclical production model works and a non-linear approach to the production cycle. What I am most interested in is the large numbers of knowledge for digital technology within this book, like the digital press kit. I think I can get an outline of process of film production. Also, this book provides detailed budgets of the process of filmmaking, a sample AV script and some useful contacts, such as Arts Law Centre of Australian, Ausfilm International, Australian Film Commission QLD and so on.

This article examines the digital technologies in film area. The digital technolygy has transformed from a tool to a current mainsream application.
