Research Topic


For my KCB336 research topic I will be exploring E-Commerce. E-commerce, is defined as commerce conducted via the Internet. This includes any purchases made over the Internet and are transacted electronically. With the rapid rise in E-Commerce, the range of information, products, and services obtainable on the internet grew enormously. The rise of interactive shopping also raised issues that consumers are concern such as Fraud and Security. Other areas to look explore from E-Commerce includes areas in:

Legality and ethical issues such as fraud and privacy have always existed among the internet community. Chapter 17 of this book provides a detailed overview on the potential threats of the origins of internet and its influences, which are deemed to be beneficial to the future generation. The book focused on the four key frameworks of marketing ethnics in particular the approaches taken to consider the significance of the two ongoing issues mentioned above. Hofacker also brought to light the laws and regulations that are heavily imposed to those who infringed the privacy of authors and holders in order to protect and govern the innocent. Comprehensive discussions of the influences caused by Internet are also taken into account in this chapter. Information provided by this author is precise and could be applicable to everyday life. This enables the author to convey a sense of vigilance to the readers. It facilitates readers to gain fundamental awareness of security and ethical issues on top of the problems that with the future development of technology may bring.

With the increase in misuse and abuse on the internet, this book stresses on security issues concerning online shopping or interactive shopping. Many users are unaware of the vast amount of threats on the Internet. With the introduction of internal network protections such as Firewall to new users, will significantly reduce the apprehension of credit card theft. Nationwide, the cost of credit card theft and fraud is well into the billions of dollars each year. Therefore, the author discussed various types of preventions that can be used to reduce and prevent credit card theft. The author also highlighted the consequences that may occur if one is unaware of security identification. Millions of transactions are made via the internet daily and users on both sides remained anonymous. Data given out may be just made believe. Therefore, it is important to take into consideration the consequences that may occur if transactions are to be made between two unknown people.

Issues such as antivirus software McAfee, network-based business transactions, virus removal tool Malicious Software Removal Tool and legal issues such as intellectual property protection and agreements International Property & International Trade are evaluated in Chapter 16. The government plays a vital role in overseeing and resolving challenges put upon them. With a rapid increase in the globalisation of the communication industry, has forced the government to revise and reinforce their current laws to protect users. Lastly, the book summarizes the major regulation issues caused by the internet followed by examples to further emphasize on this issue.

Money acts as a medium of exchange in transactions. Chapter 15 of this book consist of a brief history on the creation of money and the progression have been happening from the barter, to notational money, to electronic banking, and to electronic transmission of money in the 21st century. “Real World Cash�? and “e-Money�? both act as a medium of exchange but the author suggested that real world cash remains to be the most commonly used form of payments due to its distinctive features such as, handiness, wide acceptance, and are able to minimize risk of being cheated. This growth in e-business and e-Money is due to the phenomenal increase in Internet host Internet Growth Summary and the growing and maturing of e-business. People tend to abuse privileges given to them and thus, e-Payment is deemed to be unsafe compared to real world cash. E-Payment is broken down into 4 components; electronic currency, credit and debit cards and smart cards are also investigated to provide readers with an insight into the world of e-Business.

This book provide an detailed overview from technical, legal, and software issues to marketing, shipping, distribution, ad banners, customer service, and common-sense philosophy in order to be successful in e-Commerce. Co-author, Cataudella, is one of a few merchant benefiting from e-Commerce and therefore provides real life experiences examples to readers. Chapter 14 & 15 features a detailed section dealing with accepting and processing payments online. It also includes information on security issues, Electronic Software Distribution, and shipping fears. Consumers today are reluctant to go through the hassle of getting a money order. Many prefer use the flexibility of their credit card. Both chapters teach sellers and buyers how to use Digital Certificates, Digital Signature and Public Key to recognize and stop fraud. Prevention is always better than cure.

Online banking or internet banking uses advanced computer technology to provide consumers the option of avoiding the time-consuming, paper-based aspects of traditional banking in order to manage finances more fast and efficiently. Although online banking has its advantages, it is important to be aware of security issues such as hoax emails, employment scams and email scams. To prevent fraud, encryption is used to protect the privacy of consumers. All those transactions information should be kept safely from indiscretion by making it impossible to read and hard to decode. E-Payments and e-Money are indeed beneficial to paying bills, transferring money or buying stuff online with a lot more convenience. However, security issues are not to be neglected.

The author, Pickles is the executive vice president of Ins Web Corp. In this journal article, he discusses various online selling myths that have been circling around. It is believed that consumers have several misconceptions about insurance consumer behaviour on the Internet. When it comes to how consumers shop for and purchase insurance, particularly automotive insurance, InsWeb has discovered four common misconceptions: 1. the vast majority of online insurance shoppers are young. 2. Most online insurance shoppers end up buying their insurance online. 3. Most online insurance consumers favor buying direct to working with agents. 4. Individual agents cannot effectively compete for online consumers. InsWeb disagree with these perceptions and further went on to counter thouse accusations by providing some credible studies to expound his statement.

Transactions as simple as buying plane tickets online, shopping at the grocery store or making charitable donations all pose threats to Americans' personal information. According to the survey by the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center, this often happens without their understanding. This journal article provides surveys as many are unaware of personal information risk. It is recommended tighter federal rules for online retailers and adding consumer education to school curricula. With numbers given, consumers can now be assured as many still have misconceptions.

This journal article shows the progression of e-Retail. Interactive shopping are now seen to be a form of lifetsyle rather than convenience. With the development of technology, and education, more and more people are using the Internet. According to survey done, young adolescent tend to purchase things online compared to the older generations. Online shopping provides services such as money back guarantee and returns thus attracting consumers. To further encourage growth in online shopping is the additional effort online retailers have put into making the e-Shopping realistic and a form of lifestyle.

Despite having 4,300 categories to bid for, eBay maintains a good security and online privacy. Users can use eBay to buy and sell variety of products, including cars, toys, dolls, pottery and books. eBay targets individual customers rather than businesses and is the world’s largest person to person trading site. eBay’s Security & Resolution Centre is devoted to provide a safe trading environment, and to protect the eBay community against cashier’s cheque scam and more.
