In the late 1960s Ray Tomlinson set out to create a program that would send messages from one computer to another on the same network . Combining mailing programs used on mainframes with a file-transfer system to create email. To send an email message, the sender had to know the recipient’s identification and the address of the computer on which they received email. In 1975 John Vittal wrote an all-in-one utility named MSG, adding featured such as automatic addressing for email replies and email forwarding. Since the release of MSG, relatively few major functional changes have been made to email utilities. Most of the changes since 1975 have been matters of style and access.(Jones:2003)
The second half of the 1990s saw the introduction of free email, and its popularity explode. Begining in 1996, companies began offering web-based email accounts. This meant that users could access their email from anywhere by simply logging onto a web page that could be pulled up in any browser. There was no up front charges for these email accounts, since the companies made their money by selling advertising space on the web pages where people viewed their mail. These free email accounts were part of an overall portal strategy. Portals were intended to be one stop web sites, where people would go first to get customized news, weather reports, and stock quotes, as well as check their calendar and email. Netscape, [1] and Yahoo, [2], both offered free email as part of the package of services available on their “My Netscape� and “My Yahoo� pages. (Jones:2003)

Most email software has a mail notification alert that informs via a message or sound that you have received new mail, even while you are working in another application. Through the exchange of text messages and computer files via a communications network such as a local area network or the internet email is created. Communications devices transfer the email messages to and from computers or terminals on the same network or a separate network. Today email is a primary communications method for both personal and business use. Email may be today’s most popular and influential communications technology. Millions of people around the world send and receive email messages. Email links the geographically separated, connects the socially stratified, enables the physically limited, and encourages the publicity timid. Because of email, people are writing more than ever before, however the quality of the writing is to be questioned. Emails immediacy often results in messages that are ill conceived, casually spelled, poorly worded, grammatically flawed, and tritely expressed. (Shelly, Cashman, Vermaat:2002)
